Educational/Social Objectives

The teachers model appropriate social behavior and encourage children to problem solve through their developing language skills and imagination. The teachers encourage cooperative play and the children have ample opportunity to role play. Independence and respect for themselves and others is learned through caring for our classroom environment, taking care of personal belongings, working in small groups and mastering skills at their own pace. Developing literacy skills are embraced through storytelling, poetry, songs and nursery rhymes. Children learn to identify the parts of a story (beginning, middle, end) and retell a story in the correct sequence. The class is introduced to our alphabet, letter sounds and recognition. Children are encouraged to recognize and write their names. Math concepts such as classification of objects by size, color and shape, graphing and sequencing are taught through hands on games and manipulatives. The class is introduced to written numbers and one-to-one correspondence. Practical science skills are learned through observation and hands on participation. The teachers use our natural environment, simple science experiments and cooking to help the class develop a lifelong love for science.
